Abstract

liver transplantation (LT) is a lifesaving procedure for patients with end-stage liver disease and acute liver failure. It offers a chance to return to an active and prolonged life. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the impact of an instructional scheme for patient’s undergoing liver transplantation surgery on their performance and health outcomes. A quasi- experimental research design was used to conduct this study. A convenient sample of patients who were scheduled for liver transplantation surgeries through 6 months from the beginning of June 2014 to the end of November 2014. They were (30) patients, who were attended from liver transplantation unit and out- patient’s (clinic) in Gastro Enterology Center at Mansoura University. Four main tools were used to collect data; 1) Socio demographic and patient heath history sheet, 2) Pre/ post knowledge assessment questionnaire sheet, 3) patient’s practices sheet, and Patients health outcomes sheet (Complications assessment sheet, Diagnostic studies assessment sheet, and Health Related Quality of Life (Rand 36 item health survey version1). The results of the study concluded that, there were statistically significant improvement in total knowledge, practice, some laboratory investigation values, and health related quality of life after three months from instructional scheme implementation. Pleural effusion, dyspnea, lower limb edema, rejection, and ascites developed between the studied subjects with the same percent 6.7%. The study recommended that, all patients scheduled for liver transplantation and their families are in need to an adequate knowledge and skills to help them to adapt with their life after transplantation.
