Abstract Abstract This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy calcium carbonate nanoparticles (CCNPs) as bone substitute to induce new bone formation when used alone, or in combination with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as a paste, or as a composite containing CCNPs, AgNPs, and advanced platelet rich fibrin (A-PRF) to fill an experimentally critical segmental defect in rabbits radius. Forty-eight adult apparently healthy New Zealand White rabbits aging from 5-6 months and weighting 3.5 ± 0.5 kg were used in this study and was divided into four groups, first group: was left empty as control. Second group: CCNPs alone, third group: CCNPs/AgNPs paste and fourth group: CCNPs/AgNPs/A-PRF composite. During observation period rabbits was observed clinically and radiographically, animals was euthanized at 2,4,8,12 weeks post-implatation. A morphohistological study was made on radial bone specimens after euthanasia. Results of clinical, radiographical and morphohistological studies revealed that CCNPs/AgNPs past and CCNPs/AgNPs/A-PRF composite has a superior effect on bone regeneration than CCNPs alone. Conclusion: CCNPs has a limited bone regeneration potential when used alone and it should be used with other bone graft substitutes. |
