Abstract Background: Nigella sativa (Family Ranunculaceae) Seed and Oil is a widely used medicinal plant through out the world, it is very popular in various traditional systems of medicine like unani and tibb ayrveda and they have been widely used in the treatment of different diseases, Persistent diarrhea (PD) is diarrhea that last for more than 2 weeks and is a common cause of mortality and morbidity in infants and children Objectives: We aimed to study the effect of Nigella Sativa Oil administration on the course of persistent diarrhea in infants and young children Patients and Methods: This study was carried out on 40 infants and children aging 3 month to 24 months with comparable sex, age, and weight; presented with persistent diarrhea and admitted to diarrhea and nutrition unit pediatric department. Tanta University Hospitals Our cases were randomly divided in to 2 groups: group 1 included 20 cases who were treated by Nigella Sativa Oil in a dose of 80mg/kg/day in addition to ordinary treatment and nutritional management and group 2 included 20 cases with persistent diarrhea who were treated by ordinary treatment and nutritional management Results: Using Nigella Sativa Oil (NSO) in a dose 80mg/kg/day significantly decreased) recovery time in infants and children with PD in comparison with the control group and weight gain increased mildly when NSO used in therapy of infants and children with persistent diarrhea without any side effect Conclusion addition: of Nigella Sativa Oil to standard treatment of persistent diarrhea has a beneficial role as it significantly decrease the recovery times in infants and children with PD Key words: Persistent diarrhea, NSO, recovery time. |
