Abstract

The objective of this study is to evaluate the outcome of laryngotracheal release in cases with circumferential tracheal stenosis performing tracheal resection with end to end anastomosis. Patients and Methods: 20 patients presented to us at the ORL outpatient clinic Faculty of medicine, Cairo University during the period from November 2018 till May 2019. All patients suffered from cervical tracheal stenosis and were subjected to circumferential tracheal resection with end to end anastomosis. All patients had tracheal release of the distal tracheal segment. This study was done as a prospective study. The study was approved by the scientific committee of Otorhino-laryngology Head and Neck surgery department and the scientific committee of Faculty of medicine, Cairo University. Results: A success rate of 90% in our study was achieved; 90% in group (I) with 1% failure due to permanent airway appliance and a 90% success rate in group (II) with 1% failure due to anastomotic failure after 1 year. Conclusion: Tracheal resection with end-to-end anastomosis is a relatively safe and reliable procedure for the definitive treatment of benign tracheal stenosis in appropriately selected patients. Release maneuvers is better to be decided intra-operatively after assessment of tension produced when approximating the two tracheal ends together. Suprahyoid laryngeal release is a good procedure to allow a tension free anastomosis and provide the ability to resect relatively long stenotic tracheal segments
