Abstract Increasing attention is being paid to the occurrence and effect of phenolic compounds, with special reference to pharmaceutical compounds in the water environment. The present field survey revealed that the most common phenolic compounds were Salicylic acid, Benzoic acid and Pyrogallol in the selected water streams in Giza governorate.Their calculated (LC50) values were 574, 674 and 350 mg L-1, respectively after 24 hours of the exposure against B. alexandrina snails. The tested phenolic compounds harmfully affected the egg hatchability, survival rate and egg laying capacity of the exposed B.alexandrina snails.Such effects were supported by the assessment of some biochemical parameters in the snail{u2019}s tissue. Also, histological examinations for both the digestive and hermaphrodite glands of the exposed snails and determining DNA changes in snail{u2019}s tissue using comet assay were done |
