Abstract

One of the primary individuals responsible for developing and sustaining the mentoring culture was the nurse manager. Aim; investigate the effect of training program on unit managers’ mentoring knowledge and skills. Research design;Quasi experimental design was utilized. Setting; this study was conducted at kaserEl-Ainy Teaching Hospital. The study sample; composed of all head nurses (n= 20) who were actually in the active workforce during the time of data collection, all unit staff were observed for mentoring skills by observational checklist; pre, immediate and follow up the program and knowledge assessment questionnaire was concerned with the assessment of the participants’ knowledge regarding to mentoring, negotiation and counseling. Data collecting using three tools. 1st tool wasknowledge assessment questionnaire, 2nd tool wasnegotiation and counseling observational checklist and 3rd tool was program assessment tool. The study conducted on three phases: unfreeze, change and refreeze.Results; this study showed that thehighest mean scores were related to mentoring skills(Mean83.05±SD 9.90) and knowledge (Mean36.38±SD 2.35) in immediate post as compared to follow up (Mean78.20±SD 8.93)(Mean29.50±SD 6.07) and pre program implementation(Mean 41.74±SD 6.70)(Mean21.55±SD 6.82) respectively. Conclusion: based on these findings thetraining program was effectivein improving the unit managers’ mentoring knowledge and skills which were evident by approving the study hypothesis. So the research hypotheses were accepted. Recommendation: include this program in nursing training program plans for preparing mentors in Cairo university hospitals and replication of the research on a large probability sample is recommended to achieve more generalization
