Abstract Screening is important for early detection of dysphagia to help in preventing silent aspiration and the long-term sequelae of pulmonary infections. Although being simple, inexpensive and quick to perform, the 3 ounce WST is not a valid tool to detect cases of silent aspirations because a large (40%) false negative rate exists. In addition, the test does not differentiate between penetration or aspiration, if cough occurs, and is thus not truly helpful in oral feeding recommendations. |
