Abstract Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neuro-developmental disorder, which occurs in early childhood and is manifested by a high level of social interaction insufficiency, language impairment and repetitive behaviour. The etiology of autism has not been clearly defined yet. However, gastrointestinal problems, intestinal microbial dysbiosis may be involved in the development of autism. In our study, thirty five stool samples were collected from autistic children who referred to the Clinical Genetics Department, National Research Centre. Dokki, Giza and fifteen samples were collected from normal children. All samples exposed to immunological evaluation of gut IgA and microbiological evaluation of the yeast growth. The infectous yeasts were identified as (C. albicans, C. dulblinesis, C. glabarata, C. kefyr, C. krusei, C. lusitania and T. mucoides). Among nine investigated plant extracts and oils were examined for antifungal effect against seven pathogenic yeasts isolated from autistic children, moringa oil (M.O) showed a significant antifungal property against tested yeasts and gut IgA level. In addition, M.O showed a significant protease and elastase inhibition which considered virulence factors of candidiasis in autistic children. Also, in vivo toxicological assessment can confirm the safety of M.O in treatment of candidiasis and treatment of candidiasis in mice models. These results concluded that M.O may treat candidiasis problem safely at autistic children hence, improving their behavior. Moreover, GC/MS results showed significant probability of seventeen biological active compounds which gave synergetic high antifungal, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Over all, M.O is a promising natural source for the development of novel agent for gastrointestinal candidiasis in autistic children treatment which may improve their gut immunity and behavior problems. |
