Abstract

Dermatoscopy is also known as dermoscopy, skin surface microscopy and epiluminescence microscopy.
The essential components of a dermatoscopy include an illumination system, achromatic lens, contact plate, and power supply. The indications of dermoscopy include evaluation of hair disorders, general pigmentary disorders, appendageal tumors, inflammatory disorders, and pre-and post-evaluation of therapeutic procedures. The main disadvantage of available dermoscopy devices is the relatively high cost and most of these devices are compatible with only one particular make of smart-phones. The aim of this study was to compare between dermoscopy and jewelry loupe results and to evaluate the possible use of such a cheaper device in the clinical evaluation of different skin diseases.
Participants: This study was done on 100 cases of different definitive skin diseases that include: (hair, nail, nevi, skin tumors, and inflammatory skin diseases).
Each case was subjected to Dermoscopic evaluation by dermlite DL4 and photo documentation, Jeweler’s loupe examination and photo documentation, Comparison regarding the findings of each disease were done. Cases were collected from dermatology outpatient clinics at Menoufia University Hospital. A written consent form approved by the Local Ethical Research Committee was obtained from every case before study initiation. Procedure: we used a simple jeweler’s loupe with ×10 magnification and a built-in LED (Light-Emitting Diode) light. The loupe after the extension was taped to the back of the smartphone with the lens approximating the lens of the smartphone camera. Alcohol gel was used as the dermoscopy fluid. It should be noted that the lesions were viewed through the fluid with a small gap between the loupe and the fluid. Wart lesions were examined through a microscopic glass slide to avoid cross-infection. Data were collected, tabulated, statistically analyzed.
