Abstract Background: Adherence and safety challenges appeared with the use of oral chemotherapeutic agents like capecitabine, necessitating the implementation of a more focused follow-up for patients receiving these agents. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of telephone-based follow-up on patients{u2019} adherence to capecitabine, capecitabine safety, efficacy and health service utilization in colorectal, and gastric cancer patients. Setting: Two hundred and four colorectal and gastric cancer patients were recruited from National cancer institute, Cairo, Egypt. Methods: This was a prospective randomized controlled open label study on patients treated with capecitabine-based chemotherapy regimens. Patients were randomly allocated to either control (N = 98) group (receiving the chemotherapy with the standard usual care) or the intervention (N=106) group (receiving the chemotherapy, standard usual care, and 2 telephone calls in each treatment cycle by a pharmacist). The Main outcome measure focused on patients{u2019} adherence (assessed using tablet count technique), and safety (assessed using common terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE) version 4.03) |
