Abstract Background: Osteoporosis is a highly prevalent degenerative bone disease and is considered a serious public health concern. There is increased prevelance of osteoporosis among patients who are treated by selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) as fluvoxamine maleate. Collagen hydrolysate (CH) is a nutritional component with antiresorptive effect. Aim of work: The study was planned to evaluate the possible protective effect of CH against fluvoxamine maleate{u2013}induced osteoporosis. Materials and methods: Thirty six adult male albino rats were divided into 4 groups; group I (control group), group II (osteoporosis group): rats were injected subcutaneously with fluvoxamine maleate daily for 4 weeks, group III (CH group): rats received fluvoxamine maleate concomitantly with CH orally for 4 weeks and group IV (recovery group) : rats received fluvoxamine maleate as in group }} for 4 weeks only and then the rats were left without taking any drugs for another 4 weeks. Total serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and calcium (ca +2) were analyzed. Bone specimens from the femur and lumbar vertebra were processed for H&E stain, mallory trichrome stain and immunohistochemical staining for osteopontin (OPN) and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) |
