Abstract

Background: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe psychiatric disorder involving a range of symptoms including emotional dysregulation, impulsivity and suicidality. Although neuroimaging studies are beginning to provide evidence of alteration in white matter integrity in this disorder, the pathogenesis of BPD is not well understood. Aim: To assess structural alteration of corpus callosum (CC) in adolescent females with borderline personality traits and detect the relationship between these changes and BPD symptoms. Method: A case control study was conducted on fifty adolescent subjects who were recruited from Kasr Al Ainy Hospital, Cairo University over a period of 8 months. The patient group, comprised of 25 subjects with borderline personality traits recruited from the outpatient clinic, were compared to 25 healthy adolescent controls. Patients were diagnosed by SCID II for DSM IV. All subjects were assessed by Borderline Personality Questionnaire, Barratt impulsivity scale-11, Brief Non-Suicidal Self-Injury assessment tool, Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation, and diffusion tensor imaging. Results: Relative to control subjects, the BPD group had significantly lower fractional anisotropy (FA) values in the genu and lower mean diffusivity (MD) values in the body of the corpus callosum. There was a negative correlation between FA values in the body and genu of CC and impulsivity
