Abstract Background: Domestic violence against women is a global problem without cultural, geographic, religious, social, economic or national boundaries. The global estimated is 38%. It is a hidden problem in Kuwait. Objectives: To estimate the prevalence and risk factors of domestic violence among women attending primary health care in Kuwait and to study physicians{u2019} knowledge attitude and practice towards domestic violence against women. Materials and Method: Two approaches were used: Women approach: 601 women attending primary health care centers were interviewed. Physicians approach: 105 physicians participated in the study and filled a questionnaire included domains regarding knowledge, attitude and practice regarding domestic violence. They were subjected to an interventional session for raising their awareness. Post intervention questionnaire were applied for assessment of the results. Results: The overall prevalence of domestic violence within the 12 months prior to the study was 56.1%. The highest prevalence was related to psychological violence (42.4%) and economic (41.4%) followed by physical (35.1%) and sexual violence (28.8%). Instability of marriage and husband controlling behavior were common risk factors for all types of domestic violence |
