Abstract Gynecomastia is a common problem occurring in about 30-70% of males of different age groups . Gynecomastia could be a psychologically disabling condition especially in pubertal boys. Surgery is considered the mainstay of treatment for severe or persistent cases. A medical management aimed at altering the effective androgen/estrogen ratio has been suggested with inconstant results. Some promising results have been obtained by using antiestrogens. There are no adequate data on the estrogen receptors expression in gynecomastia. We studied ER alpha in 22 patients with gynecomastia. ER Ü was determined by Immunohistochemical staining of 39 mammary samples from patients with gynecomastia to study pattern of their expression in ductal tissues. This analysis indicated the involvement of estrogen hormone and estrogen receptors in the pathophysiology of glandular gynecomastia especially in young adults. This could drive to search for new and selective anti- estrogen drugs for medical treatment of glandular gynecomastia |
