Abstract Abstract Background: Estrogen has been found to play an important role in a variety of organ systems. Recently estrogen has been discovered to be produced in the human brain and is thought to contribute to central auditory processing. Following menopause, when estrogen levels are low, many women report hearing loss but show no deficits in peripheral hearing sensitivity, lending credence to the idea that estrogen influences central auditory processing. Although there has been a lot of research done on estrogen and hearing loss in animals, there hasn’t been much done on the human model |
