Abstract Objective: To determine, in a systematic manner; the best method for anterior segment retraction in relation to inclination, rate of retraction, pain, root resorption & anchorage loss. Material & Methods: A literature survey from electronic databases (PubMed, Cochrane, Embase, Lilacs and Ovid) was performed. In addition manual search was done for the related journals (AJODO, JCO, Angle, and EJO). Hand search of grey literature was also conducted. The search strategy included only terms related to describing the population, intervention and the comparator. Results: The search strategy resulted in 1178 articles. 267 Abstracts that appeared to fulfill the inclusion criteria were retrieved. 71 Retrieved articles were then carefully evaluated by 2 reviewers & specific inclusion criteria were applied. In addition to rate of retraction and inclination of anterior teeth, analysis of pain, root resorption, anchorage loss and oral hygiene were also conducted as a secondary outcomes. Conclusion: Upon systematically reviewing the literature, NO studies were found that compared between friction and frictionless mechanics. There is no enough evidence in the orthodontic literature regarding the best guidelines for anterior segment retraction |
