Abstract

Drawing process may be considered as one of the most important metal forming processes which mostly used in the manufacturing of electrical and automotive parts. Wire drawing process as a type of metal drawing is the process of reducing wire diameter or changing the cross section of a wire. The lubricant in the process of wire drawing can be considered as one of the most important parameters which affects the product quality and the process load. Many researchers studied the effect of different types of lubrication on the performance of the wire drawing process. Nowadays, the used lubricants in wire drawing specially in EGYPT are imported from Europe or USA. The imported lubricants with its high cost are also a limitation in the industry of wire drawing due to controlling the industry in case of lack of importation or any increase of Dollars exchange rate. In this research the effect of new mixes of lubricant on the load of wire drawing process and the mechanical properties of the produced wire was investigated. The investigated lubricant is a developed mix of oil of type Co-operation oil HP140 with 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10, and 12.5% graphite weight ratio. The main advantage of these lubricants is that its contents are locally manufactured, and this will prevent the disadvantages of the imported oils. The investigated lubricant was tested with different drawing speeds. The results of drawing as received Aluminum wires from 2.93 mm diameter to 2.54 mm showed that; the new mixes of graphite with oil is reducing the wire drawing load as the percentage of graphite increasing till 7.5 weight ratio. Any further increase in the graphite ratio over 7.5% increases the process load. Also, the results showed that the mechanical properties of the produced wires were affected by the lubrication type.
