Applications and smart techniques are huge technological developments in this current age. Consequently, many countries have started to invest and use such technology in different aspects of life because of what it can largely facilitate in archives and document management. Accordingly, this study seeks to benefit from those applications and smart technology in archives and document management, and to transform it into smart archival institutes. The study also shows how these applications and smart techniques are useful when using them in archives.
The study is conducted in a qualitative analysis as being the most appropriate approach for that type of research that aims to identify the current situation of the problem, to describe it, and to clarify and detail its rationale in form of questions. Subsequently, the sample of study includes a set of websites of national Arabic and foreign archives. One of the most important findings concluded by the study is that some archives have recently activated smart services. E.g., the national American and Emirati archives for online smart phone applications and download.
The American archive has 6 smart phone applications, the British Archive has 1 smart phone application and the Emirati one has 9; two for the Emirati archive and seven for leaders’ and princes’ daily life. For the archives to be transformed into smart, the study recommends coping up with the international and Arabic experiences in information institutes, i.e., the libraries becoming smart, so as to know the most important advantages and to identify the difficulties before transformation. It is time for the Arabic archives to be updated with a smart technology activating integrated services. The archives should stay away from fears of using modern technology and techniques, particularly, the artificial intelligence.
