Abstract Securing energy supplies is a key priority to The European Union, given its energy insufficiency and its dependence on external sources especially from Russia. Recently, the new Eastern Mediterranean gas discoveries have attracted a significant international interests in particular the European Union’s interest. Notably, after the discovery of the supergiant Zohr gas field offshore Egypt which is considered to be the largest gas field in the Mediterranean Sea. In order to increase its energy security and to get over its lack of energy sources diversification and to reduce it dependency on Russian gas, the European Union is looking to import the newly discovered gas from the Eastern Mediterranean region. The thesis aims to study the role of the new Eastern Mediterranean gas discoveries in the European energy security. In fact the EU has already faced energy crisis due to problems between Russia and Ukraine resulted in Russian gas supply cuts-offs to the EU. Therefore the EU determined to secure its energy supply through some procedures aiming to reduce its dependency on Russian gas by diversifying its resources of energy supply and by creating the EU energy union in order to have a unified EU energy union strategy. Concerning Egypt, it is considered as the corner stone of a new Mediterranean energy hub because Egypt has significant gas reserves as well as the necessary gas export infrastructure and the necessary gas regulation. The Mediterranean gas finds in the East Mediterranean region which has already multiple lines of conflicts and demarcations dispute, resulted in greater region instability and growing provocation. The EU considered the newly discovered Mediterranean gas as an additional important option of natural gas supply but finally EU still to be dependent on Russian gas. Finally, the new East Mediterranean gas did not bring peace to the region in order to fully exploit their new energy resources but it contributed in increasing tension and disputes between some countries in the region |
