Abstract

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a glucose intolerance of varying severity diagnosed during pregnancy that usually resolves postpartum. Aim: Assess knowledge, practice, and perception of women with previous GD during the postpartum period. Methods: Descriptive design . A purposive sample of 112 women in postnatal period with GD during previous pregnancies attending primary health care centers & units that represent the four districts of Port Said city. Tools: three tools were used consisting of a structured interview schedule, perception scale of GDM, and diabetic attitude scale of GDM. Results: More than 50% of participants had unsatisfied knowledge of GD lifestyle and behavior, signs and symptoms, and risk factors; 50% had poor general postpartum habits; poor adherence to preventive behaviors; negative perceptions of risk and negative attitudes about the importance of strict glycemic control and patient autonomy. Conclusion: Less than half of the participants reported poor GDM-related practices, while more than half had unsatisfactory knowledge, negative perceptions, and attitudes.
