Abstract Background; The routine antenatal sonographic investigations of the umbilical cord are limited for assessment of number of umbilical vessels and Doppler evaluation of umbilical blood flow. With the advancements of the sonographic techniques it is now possible to have more detailed evaluation of umbilical cord, Aim and objectives; to compare between the effectiveness and accuracy of ultrasound measurement of cross sectional area of the umbilical cord versus Hadlock’s formula in predicting of neonatal birth weight at term gestation, Subjects and methods; This was cross sectional study, was conducted on 220 pregnant women at Ain Shams University Maternity Hospital from July 2021 to May 2022. All women were subjected to Detailed History, Physical Examination, and Investigation, Result; there was a significant positive correlation between the prenatal U/S measured umbilical cord diameter, umbilical arteries, umbilical vein, Wharton’s jelly, estimated fetal weight (EFW) and actual birth weight, Conclusion; the cross-sectional areas of the umbilical cord components are important factors to consider when evaluating fetal growth. The normality parameters established by this study can serve as reference for later studies that might correlate such parameters with fetal growth disorders and pregnancy disorders such as diabetes mellitus and hypertension. |
