Abstract

Ketogenic diet is a non-pharmacologic treatment for childhood epilepsy not responding to drugs. This is a prospective study conducted to measure the efficacy and tolerability of the ketogenic diet in children with intractable epilepsy. Twenty eight children were treated with the KD at The Children{u2019}s Hospital at Cairo University between December 2012 and March 2014, and had continuous follow-up of 6 months after initiation of the KD. Our results emphasized that, treatment with the classic Ketogenic Diet is associated with a substantial decrease in seizure frequency in some children with difficult-to control seizures. Low compliance rate was also reported with diet intolerability was the main reason behind diet discontinuation rather than the adverse effects
