Abstract The chemical composition of yarrow (Achillea millefolium ) was studied. The proximate analysis was found that that the moisture, ash, crude protein, total lipid and total carbohydrate of Achillea millifolium are 77.2%, 14.63%, 7.57%, 7.87% and 69.93% of dry weight, respectively. The different concentrations of aqueous extract of of Achillea millefolium gave the highest antioxidant activity against DPPH radical assay (36.2,77.5,83.0,86.2 and 91.9 % at 5,15,25,50 and 100 æg/ml of different concentrations of aqueous extract, respectively) when compared with other extracts i.e. methanol, ethyl acetate, n-butanol, chloroform and Petrolum.ether solvents. The oral administration of aspirin at 200mg/kg to rats control (+ve₁) group and oral administration of Ibuprofen at 200mg/kg to rats another control (+ve₂) group significantly increased the total acidity and volume , but decreased pH of gastric juice compared to control (-ve) group. The treatment with aqueous extract of Achillea millfolium (250 mg/kg/day), ranitidine (13.5 mg/kg/day b.w) and omeprazole (1.8 mg/kg/day b.w) reduce the volume of gastric juice, total acidity and raised gastric pH significantly (p<0.05) compared to the control groups (+ve₁ and +ve₂) |
