Abstract Background: Stress hyperglycemia (SH) usually occurs in pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), which is associated with poor clinical outcomes. The pathogenesis is multi-factorial. Aims: To assess incidence, associations of SH in PICU and to study the pathogenesis, if it results from Ý-cell dysfunction or insulin resistance or both. Also to assess adiponectin level and correlate it with insulin level in PICU. Methods: This study included 60 critically ill children and 21 controls. Fasting serum samples of BG, insulin, C-peptide and adiponectin were taken within 24 hours of admission. Homeostasis model assessment (HOMA) of insulin resistance was used to asses Ý-cell function (HOMA-B%) and insulin sensitivity (HOMA-S%) |
