Abstract The pathogenesis of endothelial dysfunction in SCD attracts the attention of investigators{u2019} to the effects of chronic hemolysis on vascular bed integrity and function in patients with congenital hemolytic anemias. Significant elevation in the plasma chitotriosidase enzyme is an established risk factor for venous thrombosis and arteriosclerosis. Objective: This study, aimed to estimate the level of chitotriosidase activity in pediatric patients with Sickle cell disease as a predictor of the risk of premature atherosclerosis and to evaluate its relation to different clinical ,laboratory parameters in those patients. In addition to measurement of right and left carotid intimal thickness. Methods: Thirty patients with SCD were compared with 30 age and sex matched healthy subjects serving as control. In addition to detailed clinical& laboratory data, assessment of premature atherosclerosis was performed by measuring plasma chitotriosidase enzyme activity &carotid intimal thickness by doppler and the results were correlated to different clinical & laboratory parameters |
