Abstract Removal of brilliant yellow azo dye from wastewater by electro-coagulation was carried out using a cell composed of aluminium helical coil whose external surface acts as an anode. The helical coil anode was enclosed between two aluminium cylindrical screen cathodes. The parameters investigated in the present work were the current density, initial dye concentration, pH value of solution, solution temperature, 𝑁𝑎𝐶𝑙 concentration, and stirring speed. The present study’s optimal settings were 3 𝑚𝐴/𝑐𝑚 but from an economical point of view 1.7 𝑚𝐴/𝑐𝑚 was better as it had a lower E.E.C, 30 𝑔⁄𝑙 of 𝑁𝑎𝐶𝑙, 50 𝑚𝑔⁄𝑙 of dye, pH 5, no magnetic stirring and 25°C. Most of the variables were found to have opposing effects on the % dye removal. Under the optimum conditions, about 92% of the dye was removed in 90 minutes. Depending operational settings, the electrical energy usage per kg of dye removed varied from 3.258 to 313.3 𝑘𝑊. ℎ. |
