Abstract Welding of dissimilar alloys Mg and Al is challenging due to the formation of brittle intermetallic compound (IMCs) such as Mg17Al12 and Mg2Al3. In order to increase the joint strength and obtain defect free joining of the light alloys, two main approaches were used to eliminate or reduce the Mg-Al intermetallic reaction layer. First approach, Control important processing parameters of solid state welding technique, FSW which have a low welding temperature were used to reduce the IMCs. Second approach, Employing the interlayers Ni and Zn foil during welding of Al to Mg to eliminate intermetallic and improve mechanical properties of the joints. The addition of Zn has eliminated the surface discontinuities and sound weld has been produced and improved the shear strength from 55.4 MPa to 82.5 MPa, reduced the hardness by about 110 HV, the microstructure exhibited lower amount of IMC. The Ni interlayer improved the shear strength from 55.4 MPa to 102 MPa and reduced the hardness by 160 HV the microstructure exhibit nil IMC the microstructure and metallurgical reaction are described. |
