Abstract Irrigation and drainage canals in Egypt have become a primary issue recently, where Egypt owns 33.5 thousand km of irrigation canals and about 20 thousand km of drainage canals. water management at this time is of significant concern to the state, due to current events which could cause a shortage in water supply. This research is investigating various methods of protecting drainage canals, as a way to protect the water inside from being wasted uselessly, It was subjected to failures as a result of various factors; for example, roads by the waterway, are subjected to heavy loads, as well as the seepage forces in the soil regardless of its type. Moreover, the low quality of the soil layers is considered one of the most remarkable factors that cause failure of banks of drains. Four study cases of slope failures are selected in drains in Buhira Governorate in an attempt to identify the causes of failures and optimal protection methods. A slope failure cannot be dealt with in a single or shared approach due to the differences in each site’s characteristics. Therefore, the optimal method of handling each site must be investigated thoroughly and separately. |
