Abstract Summary Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune-mediated systemic inflammatory disorder affecting the skin and various organ systems. In the USA, psoriasis affects about 7.4 million adults. In Egypt, psoriasis ranges between 0.19 and 3%. Plaque psoriasis, a common type of psoriasis, accounts for about 80–90% of cases. It presents as well-defined, erythematous plaques covered by silvery-white scales. Even though the condition is not life-threatening, it is difficult to treat, and response rates vary widely. Psoriasis affects the scalp, trunk, buttocks, elbows, knees, umbilicus and extremities but can occur anywhere on the body. It seems that it is one disorder with different levels of severity of skin involvement. Cadherins (named for ”calcium- dependent adhesion”) are a type of cell adhesion molecule(CAM) that are important in the formation of adherens junctions to bind cells with each other. Cadherins present in the epidermal cells are involved not only in maintaining the arrangement of these cells but also in dermal condensation. E-cadherin is one of the most important molecules in cell-cell adhesion in epithelial tissues. The results prove that there was down regulation of E-cadherin in psoriatic lesion. They hence assumed that the breakdown of adheren junctions (AJs) in the psoriatic epidermis is probably involved in the hyperproliferation of keratinocytes in psoriasis. This study aimed to relate the serum level of E-cadherin and its genes (rs17715799 and rs13689) SNPs with the severity of psoriasis |
