Abstract Every type of work brings with it hazards. The working environment of nurses is no exception. Furthermore, ICU nurses face many workplaces hazards due to the complexity of their working environment. It is changing rapidly with advances in medical science and innovative technologies. The ICU nurses continually deals with the pain and death of patients, which requires them to manage complex emotions. Negative outcomes for the ICU nurses can be related to job dissatisfaction and burnout. Burnout of nurses was linked to organizational features and the work context, such as workload and hazards in the workplace. Aim of the study: the present research aimed to assess the relation between occupational hazards and nurses‟ job burnout at Intensive Care Units. Subjects and method: A descriptive correlation research design was used in present study. The present study was conducted in intensive care units at Tanta university hospitals including, Tanta Main University Hospital and Emergency Hospital. Subjects consisted of representative‟s sample of staff nurses (n=390) in, Main University Hospital contained nurses (n=243) and Emergency University Hospital contained nurses (n=147). The following tools were used: Tool I: Occupational Hazards Structured Questionnaire It consisted of two parts. The first part included personal characteristics of nurses. Second part included Occupational hazards Questionnaire; it consisted of (53 items) classified to six dimensions; hazards related to physical environment, hazards related to working conditions, psychosocial hazards, ergonomic hazards, biological hazards and chemical hazards. Nurses’ responses were measured on three points Likert Scale ranging from (1) always to (3) never. Tool II: Nurses’ Job Burnout Scale, it consists of (22 items) classified to three dimensions; emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal achievement. Nurses‟ responses were measured on a five-points Likert Scale ranged from (1) never to (5) every day. |
