Abstract Until 2013, there was no reliable and standardized Arabic scale to help in the diagnosis and prognosis of the different types of aphasia except for the Arabic Screening Test (Fabbro,2001) concerning the bilingual aphasics based upon the Bilingual Aphasia Test by Michel Paradis (Paradis, 2004). Then in 2013, an Arabic version for the Boston Aphasia diagnostic Examination was included in a master Degree thesis by Ayoub (Ayoub,2013). Both scales did not include any linguistic analysis, but rather an assessment from a medical perspective. Thus, through this study, the researcher’s intention is to overcome this gap by providing a linguistic analysis of the verbal data provided by the patients which is based on Chomsky’s theories The importance of such linguistic analysis is to be parallel to the clinical examination of the patients and thus assist in quick diagnosis to the type and degree of severity of aphasia. Consequently, it may help in the determination of the type of therapy to be recommended by the medical doctors; on one hand, and the phoniatricians on the other hand in order to choose the suitable exercises for each aphasia type. The aim of the study is to present a standardized, valid and reliable Arabic version of the Western Aphasia Battery Revised (WAB-R). Moreover, it sheds light on different types of aphasia with a detailed linguistic analysis of the verbal data presented by the patients to help the phoniatricians in providing the suitable exercises, based upon the linguistic theory of innateness and universal grammar set forth by Chomsky |
