Abstract Promoting sustainable design to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) became essential. The life cycle assessment (LCA) is a reliable method, but the difficulty and time of applying it discourage designers, and it is usually implemented before construction. This research aims to integrate LCA into the initial stages of building design and facilitate decision-making for architects and construction professionals. Enabling environmental impact assessment in early phases will have a worthy influence on design. The research focuses on the challenges of application and how to seek the appropriate strategy for this stage. This purpose is achieved by reviewing the building’s LCA, various stages of the building design process, and national LCA studies, then analyzing methods and frameworks in publications attempting early LCA integration. These approaches emphasized the efficiency of LCA parametric methods. Consequently, a suggested implementation method based on the generative design was developed as a framework and a prototype tool EGY-LCA (http://egy-lca.com/) for the applied approach.National building codes and materials are used within an algorithmic process to suggest exterior wall alternatives, balancing both embodied and operational environmental impacts, the tool provides multiple solutions with graphical output. The novelty of this work is that it is the first initiative offering an LCA tool in Egypt and the used parametric method for integration. |
