Abstract

Learning environments’ design plays a significant role in students’ health and well-being, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has highlighted several challenges related to the quality of learning environments in our existing schools, particularly elementary schools. Because our existing schools weren’t healthy enough to adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic, 1.2 billion children were unable to learn in their physical learning environments as a result of this emergency. Before inventing pharmaceuticals to combat the epidemic, one solution for limiting infection is to modify our learning environments and add layers of protection to promote healthy and safe spaces for students. The aim of this research is to investigate the design principles of healthy learning environments in accordance with AIA strategies for safe reopening schools, which can be concluded in three parameters, which are; providing healthy indoor environmental quality, integrating nature with learning environments, and providing safe contact in learning environments. Then, a comparative analysis will be conducted on three existing schools that have successfully limited the transmission of infection and transformed into healthy learning environments during the COVID-19 pandemic. Each parameter of the three parameters will be discussed to identify the design strategies to provide these parameters, according to the previous studies and the researches that were conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, the research provides a framework with scoring systems and a checklist for the designing of future healthy learning environments to be able to face any potential pandemic, that may occur in the future.
