Abstract

The current study aims to investigate the effect of toxic leadership on career success through the mediating role of emotional exhaustion based on the empirical study on nurses of medical centers and hospitals at Mansoura university. The research adopted the deductive approach and the method of quantitative analysis as the research methodology. The instrument utilized for data collection was the questionnaire. Consequently, 360 usable questionnaires were collected from nurses of medical centers and hospitals at Mansoura university with a response rate of (90%). In addition, using Warp PLS 8, path analysis was employed to explore the causal relationships among the study variables. The findings revealed that toxic leadership has a significant negative effect on career success. Additionally, toxic leadership has a significant positive effect on emotional exhaustion. Furthermore, emotional exhaustion has a significant negative effect on career success. Moreover, the study demonstrated that emotional exhaustion mediates the effect of toxic leadership on career success. Also, study results show that personal differences don’t have significant differences in respondents’ opinions regarding research variables (toxic leadership, emotional exhaustion, and career success) except education level and years of experience. In addition, this study also has significant practical implications and guidelines for nurses of medical centers and hospitals at Mansoura university, and theoretical implications for researchers who are interested in research variables.
