Abstract The title of this dissertation is ”Meta-discourse Markers in Showing Attitude and Stance in the Inaugural Speeches of Three American Presidents: An Appraisal Perspective.” A main purpose of this study is to analyze and describe the different types and functions of meta-discourse markers in the inaugural speeches of George W. Bush, Barack Hussein Obama, and Abraham Lincoln in terms of how they show attitude and stance. This study uses more than one way to look at the chosen data to get a clear picture of the positions and attitudes that the data show. Schiffrin (1987) says that a ”cohesive device,” which can be a word or a phrase, is a ”discourse marker.” Hyland (2005) did most of the work to make ”discourse marker” one of the most common terms in Applied linguistics. The theoretical framework for this study is Hyland’s model. In it, he divides things into two main groups: those that are interactive and those that are not. |
