Abstract

The main Purpose of this thesis is to develop a model that examines the relationship between Neighborhood Morphology and Social Cohesion in New Urban Communities in Egypt. Starting with the effect of Neighborhood Morphology (and its Subdimensions) on Social Cohesion (and its subdimensions). Then, examine the difference in Social Cohesion levels as a result of changing the Morphology of Neighborhoods. Finally, find the correlations between the subdimensions of Neighborhood Morphology and the subdimensions of Social Cohesion. To achieve this Purpose, the thesis is comprised of two stages:The first one is the Theoretical Stage, which discusses the main factors of Neighborhood Morphology that may affect the social cohesion of a place, the main dimensions of social cohesion, and the main literature discussing the impact of Neighborhood Morphology on Social Cohesion. This stage resulted in a theoretical Framework for the model developed which is comprised of three levels: Main Variables, Main Dimensions, Main Subdimensions. The Second one is the Experimental Stage, which includes a comparison of two neighborhoods selected in New Borg Al-Arab City in Egypt which differ from each other regarding their morphology, then conducting a questionnaire on a random sample selected from these neighborhoods, followed by a statistical analysis which is done in 3 steps according to the main purpose of this thesis. This stage resulted in identifying the main factors of Neighborhood Morphology affecting the dimensions/subdimensions of Social Cohesion, the difference between the social cohesion levels between the two selected neighborhoods, and finally the correlation between the subdimensions of neighborhood morphology and subdimensions of social cohesion.
