Abstract This thesis is a comparative study of Vintage by Susan Gloss and Someone by Alice McDermott from a multicultural perspective. It is divided into three chapters. The thesis focuses on the emergence of multiculturalism, its definitions and main features, and sheds light on some related concepts. It also describes multicultural literature and highlights the main characteristics of quality multicultural literature. Besides, this study investigates the criteria for evaluating a multicultural work and highlights the main features of literary multiculturalism. The study also stresses the features of multiculturalism in Vintage by Susan Gloss. These features influence the thinking and behaviours of the characters in the novel, especially the protagonists. The thesis highlights aspects like individuality, diversity, accuracy, authenticity, and equality in both Vintage by Susan Gloss and Someone by the notorious writer Alice McDermott. It also makes a comparison between the two novels and displays the differences between them. |
