Abstract

The present study is a randomized double blind controlled trial aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of intra-articular botulinum toxin type A versus Fluoroscopic guided bipolar radiofrequency ablation of genicular nerves in patients with painful knee osteoarthritis attended Rheumatology, Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine, Assiut University Hospital.
The study included 52 patients diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis; 25 patient (n=25) on BoNT-A , and 27 patient(n=27) on Radio-frequency Both studied groups were matched regarding to the baseline data with no significant difference between them.
Based on our finding we revealed that:
- Both studied group show significant reduction in VAS score from baseline to after 6th months of treatment.
- Both studied group show significant increase in Oxford score from baseline to after 6th months of treatment.
- Both studied group show significant reduction in total WOMAC score from baseline to after 6th months of treatment.
- The degree of improvement was significantly higher in Botox injection group
- The median time for first request for analgesia (hours) was significantly lower in Botox group compared to radio-frequency group.
- Patients with KOA either grade III or grade IV were benefit from IAI of BoNT-A.
- Only patients with grade III were benefit from radiofrequency waves, while those grade IV didn’t benefit from radiofrequency waves.
