Abstract

Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL) has been a well-known clinical entity for almost 60 years, but there are still many controversies regarding the best treatment. Among many drugs that were tried to treat SSHL, the conventional systemic administration of the corticosteroids was well studied in the literature.
Although the systemic use of corticosteroids is effective, many well-known serious side effects limit their routine clinical use.
This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of intratympanic injection of methylprednisolone acetate in patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss.
This study was conducted on 20 ears with SNHL attended the otolaryngology outpatient clinic in Suez Canal University hospital.
Patients have mean age of 59.23 ± 9.86 years with male predominance (55%) than female (45%).
In this study patients had mean onset of SSNHLS of 13.2 ± 2.8 days. Fifty five percent had severe SSNHL, 45% moderate. 35% had systemic disease and mean baseline PTA of 63.2±15.5 db. PTA showed significant difference in follow up measurements from baseline measurements as (p<0.05). 70% of patients showed improvement and 30% no
