Abstract The present study aims at studying conceptual metaphors as a tool of detecting semantic change in twenty selected Arabic words. Based on Lakoff and Johnson’s theory (2003) of conceptual metaphors and Winter’s (2020), the study manages to reveal that there are three main types of semantic change as detected by conceptual metaphors including narrowing, broadening and pejoration that the selected words undergo. The findings of the study reveal that CM is an effective tool to detect different types of semantic change. Besides, it is found that there is a strong relationship between the conceptual metaphors and the cognitive systems of the speakers. |
