Abstract

Four lithostratigraphic units are recognized in the study area. From bottom to top they are Moghra Formation, Hagif Formation, Muluk Formation and Qataji Formation. Moghra Formation is dominated by sands and sandstones. Few beds of shales and limestones are occasionally present. Moghra Formations is commonly recognized in two Members, Raml and Mekhimin. Raml is the oldest rock unit lower Miocene exposed in the study area. It rests unconformably on the Oligocene basalts (not exposed in the study area) and underlies Mekhimin Member. Raml Member is dominated by yellowish brown loose sands.
