Abstract

The present investigation has been carried out at Botany Department, Faculty of Science, Mansoura university, to study the mutagenic potentialities of three samples of water from different sources namely: raw sewage, treated sewage and Nile water, using known genotoxicity tests of Allium cepa and Vicia faba (two varieties of Vicia faba were used var. Giza 3 and var. Giza Blanca). Genotoxicity test showed that, decrease the mitotic index in both Allium cepa and Vicia var. G. 3 with the different water samples where in decrease in case of Vicia var. G. Blanca. Also revealed that, the production of many types of chromosomal aberrations. Stickiness was the most frequent besides, micronucleus, banded chromosomes, bridges, laggard chromosomes and others in low frequency as ring chromosome and fragmented chromatin which appeared only after recovery of Allium cepa roots which pretreated with raw sewage. cells treatmented with raw and treated sewage give the higher values of chromosomal aberrations percentage followed by those treated with Nile water.The recommendation is to avoid irrigation with raw and treated sewage water. The treatment process must be more advanced and efficient to eliminate the pollution from raw sewage. Great efforts must be devoted to keep the Nile water with a little pollution.
