Abstract This study carried out to determine the effect of renal failure and serial hemodialysis on thyroid functions and its possible affection by renal transplantation. The work was carried out on 41 patients with ESRD I who were c1assiful1ed into those under conservative treatment (9 patients), those undergoing serial hemodialysis (32 patients) of whom 8 pati, ents have undergone kidney transplantation. In addition to normal healthy matched subjects were chosen to act as a control group. Assessment of thyroid functional status (T3 T T3 uptake, FTI and TSH) was carried out beside some renal and hepatic functions (serum creatinine, alkaline phosphatase, SGPT and serum albumin) and complete blood picture. The following results were observed : 1. Serum T 3 was significantly lowered in uremi.c patients whether treated conservatively o r by hemodialysis in comparison to control subjects. 2. Serum T4 was significantly lowered i n patients wi th ESRD whether managed conservatively or by hemodialysis than in control. 3. T 3 uptake was found. To be within normal range in patients with ESRD whether managed by hemodialysis or conservatively. |
