Abstract Chronic spontaneous nitrogenous encephalopathy is a well known complication of advanced cirrhosis. Zinc deficiency is common in cirrhosis and many factors were postulated for this. Furthermore, it was found that serum zinc is inversely related to fasting ammonia level. One of the factors responsible for low serum zinc is porto-systemic shunting which is always associated with chronic porto- systemic encephalopathy. The present studY is a comparative evaluation of the changes in some trace elements in hepatic encephalopathy versuS states of functional psychosis. The present studY comprised 85 cases with an age range from 30-55 years. They were classified into 3 groups: A- Control group (10) cases. B- group of hepatic encephalopathy (45) cases. This group was subdivided into (4) subgrouPS according to the grade of encephalopathY: a) Grade 1, 10 cases. b) Grade 2, 10 cases. c) Grade 3, 10 cases. d) Grade 4, 15 cases. |
