Abstract It is evident that psychiatric emergency services playa crucial role in providing mental health services to the community. The potentially dramatic impact ofthe visits on the patient’s life and the expanding role of the psychiatric emergency ward in delivery of mental health services make the process of emergency psychiatric intervention an important service, training, and research area. The aim of this study was to investigate the use of psychiatric emergency services in Mansoura University Casualty Hospital with special stress on socio-demographic characteristics of the individuals using such services. Also, to asses the clinical, demographic and situational factors affecting admission versus discharge decision in psychiatric emergency room. Follow up services were offered to indicated cases. The review of literature includes a brief note on the concepts, importance and prevalence of psychiatric emergencies. Also, factors correlated with psychiatric emergency services were presented; such as socio-demographic, clinical, clinician, patient and family variables. As well as common psychiatric emergencies were also presented. The studied group compnses the whole No. of psychiatric emergency patients attending Mansoura University Casualty Hospital |
