Abstract

Clinical diagnosis of meniscal tears is very difficult especially in the early stage in which the symptomes and signs are similar to that produced by other traumatic conditions of the knee ( Rookwood ani creen, 1975 ) • Noble, and Erat, (1980) stated that there is no reliable clinical pattern which can differentiate between the patients with”a tron meniscus and those without, moreover they reported that in 20% of the patients with a diagnosis of meniscal tears the symptomes settled, indicating their unreliable transience. 01so plain x-ray alone is not valuable in the diagnosis of meniscal tears because the menisci are radiolucent structures. It can only help in the exclusion of other traumatic condit~ons of the knee .and in detection of any calcifications of menisci(Chonil’ooaLoi~8i8). Arthrography has become a well established procedure in the diagnosis of meniscal tears. It is a simple technique which requires very simple equipments that can be provided in any radiology out patient clinic. High degrees of accuracy in the diagnosis of meniscal tears by this technique were reported. Nicholas et al, (1970) reported 97.5% accuracy. Hirschowitz, (1976) reported 77% while Ireland et al, (1980) reported 86% accuracy. In this study it is about 68%.
