Abstract The aim of this work is to detect the cause(s) of hemoptysis in patient with a normal chest radiograph by the lowest number of tests (cost-effectiveness study). This study included 50 cases presenting with hemotysis and normal chest radiograph with ages ranging from 18 to 62 years (mean age of 36.7 + 13.1 years). The studied cases were 25 (50%) male and 25 (50%) female ; 35 (70%) were non smoker and 15 (30%) were smokers. They were classified according to amount of blood (hemoptysis) into trivial, moderate, and massive, and according to number of episodes single episode and recurrent. All cases were subjected to the following:I- Thorough history taking and clinical examination. 2- Plain X-ray chest (poster,o-anterior and lateral films). 3- Blood picture: hemoglobin content, red blood ’cells count, total leucocytic count, differential leucocytic count, and platelet count. 4- Prothrombin time and activity, INR, and activated partial thromboplastin time. 5- Liver function tests and kidney function tests. 6- Erythrocyte sedimentation rate. 7- Fasting and 2-hours post prandial blood glucose. |
