Abstract This study was designed to compare the effectiveness of bilateral intrapleural analgesia with lumbar epidural analgesia in postoperative pain relief in upper abdominal surgery. Thirty patients were included in this study (ASA I & II) of either sex with age ranging 20-60 years. The chosen patients were scheduled . for elective upper abdominal operations In . Gastroenterology Center, Mansoura University. The studied patients were divided into 2 groups: - First group: Received· bilateral intrapleural analgesia in the form of mixture of bupivacaine 0.5% (0.8 mg / kg) and morphine 2 mg in each side after dilution in 50 ml saline. Second group: Received lumbar epidural analgesia in the form of mixture of bupivacaine 0.5% (0.8mg/kg) and morphine 2 mg diluted in 20 ml saline. General anaesthesia was the same in both groups. Induction was done bymidazolam (0.05 mg/kg), fentanyl (1 ug/kg), thiopentone sodium (5 mg/kg) & intubation was facilitated by suxamethonium. Maintenance of anaesthesia was achieved by N20 : O2, halothane & atracurium. |
