Abstract This research included two experiments were carried out on three stroycs building in Bilqas City in Dakahlia Governorate. - 1st experiment was carried out during the period from September 1998 to September 2000. – 2nd experiment was carried out during the period from July 1999 to October 2000. At the first experiment, two succulent plants used as ground covers were used at the first experiment: 1- Delosperma cooperi, Hook.f., Fam. Aizoaceae. 2- Aptenia cordifolia, L.f., Fam. Aizoaccae. At the second experiment, two turfgrasses were used: 1- Cynodon dactylon, L. (Bermuda grass), Fam. Poaceae. 2- Agrostis canina, L.(Bent Rhode Island or velvet Bent) , Fam. Poaceae. The tested plants species were planted in two different soil mixtures and irrigated with two rates of water. The research aimed to study the possibility of cultivating these plant species under Egyptian conditions on roofs of the buildings as an attempt to create a green cover on existing roofs to gain its aethetical, environmental and recreational benefits by using an extensive kind of green roofs that needs low cost. That is for it needs low amounts of water, no fertilizers and no maintenance. The measurements were as followed: 1- Two soil types were chemically analyzed each 6 months for each plant species from the beginning of the experiment till the end of it for the first experiment and each 5 months for the second one. 2- Growing and development of each plant species planted in the two soil mixture were measured as follow: 2.a Succulents: 1- Percent of ground cover was monthly measured. 2- Percent of dry matter was determined before planting and at the end of the experiment. 3- N,P, K % was measured at the beginning and at the end of the experiment. 4- Chlorophyll and carotene was estimated at the end of the experiment. 2.bTurfgrass: 1- Percent or ground cover was monthly measured. 2- Dry weight (g/m2) was monthly measured after mowing. 3- N, P, K % was determined at the end of the experiment. 4- Chlorophyll and carotene was estimated at the end of the experiment. |
