Abstract Irreversible hydrocolloid (Alginate) is currently the most popular dental impression material. Contamination of such alginate impression with human saliva containing large number of microorganisms negetates the importance of a proper disinfection with main object to reduce the count of adherent pathogenic microorgansim. A variety of methods have been used to disinfect this kind of impressions. But the majority of these disinfectants had demonstrated powerful microbial killing effect with deterioration of some physicomechanical properties of these impression materials. Searching for an effective anti-microbial disinfectants without deterioration of physico-mechanical properties of impression material is an optimal requirement of this study. So this study had two phases; the first phase was dealing with identif,’ing a disinfectant with powerful enough concentration to kill pathogenic microorganisms. The second phase of this study was concerned with the effective disinfectants concentration that not deteriorates the physico- mechanical properties of alginate impression. This study tested two effective disinfectants (Povidone iodine and Calcium hypochiorite) blended with alginate impression material powder at variable concentrations (5.0, 10.0, 15.0, 20.0 and 25.0 wt %). These disinfectants were tested for their anti-microbial effect against the most. |
